EVAN M JOHNSON
-DOCUMENTARY EDITOR-
The opportunity to dedicate myself to a historical era or modern cause. The challenge of finding the perfect story elements in an abundance of material. The moment when audio and visual elements align, as if by fate, to create new meaning.
These are things I love about editing documentaries.
Below is some of the work that has provided me with these experiences.

THE KING OF IN BETWEEN
PRODUCER / EDITOR
As a multi-racial rock and roller who drew influence from the Greenwich Village folk scene, the Doo-wop sounds of his Brooklyn childhood, and reggae before its global popularity, Garland Jeffreys holds a unique place in rock history. This film explores how America's racial attitudes, the tyranny of genre in the 20th century record industry, and Garland's own decisions made him a cult figure, but never a superstar.
The King of In Between was awarded DocNYC's 2023 Audience Award and is currently featured in film festivals around the world.

Check it out on Hulu.

ADDITIONAL EDITOR
The Oratorio combines American and European histories, operatic performance, and Martin Scorsese to tell the story of New York City's St. Patrick's Old Cathedral and a 19th century cultural milestone that was, until now, forgotten. It's available through PBS.

Additional Experience
My time in the documentary industry started with an editorial internship on 2013's History of the Eagles. Through that internship, I was connected to an amazing group of filmmakers at Jigsaw Productions. As an assistant editor at Jigsaw in the following years, I witnessed the evolution of many powerful documentaries and helped to create a few, such as Rolling Stone: Stories From The Edge, The New Yorker Presents, and Sinatra: All or Nothing At All. That invaluable experience introduced me to the full process of making a documentary from pre-production through the many stages of post. It was also my first glimpse of how beautifully collaborative the process can be and the individual growth one can take from it.
